Domestic
Zoo Pattern
an adaptation of an antique
rug by Magdalena Briner
Below is a rug hooked by
Susan for her friend Carol. The design looks great with the dark
background as well. Good job Susan and what a great friend you are
to do this for Carol.

Domestic
Zoo Pattern
The original rug (24" x 75") was hooked approximately
1870 by Magdalena Briner who hooked motifs which were familiar to her.
The images in the rug are serpents, leaves, birds, cats, donkey, fruit
and other images in the mind and hand of Magdalena. She used
whatever textiles or colors she had available to her which makes this a
wonderful rug to hook as you can use up wool strips left over from previous projects.
Then as you are hooking you can say to yourself...." I'll use this because
'that is all
she had' to use. I've mentally used that phrase numerous times
throughout this rug and it is a beauty.
I tried to use colors close to the original
but using what I had available to me ~ just as 'she' would have done.
This design measures 22 1/2" x 67" which is
a tad smaller than the original version but still captures it's essence.
It was hooked using mostly #8 and #8.5 cuts, will be hand drawn on linen backing with a 3" margin and serged
edges to prevent
raveling. $98 plus shipping.

Lions in the Woods Pattern
an antique adaptation
This rug was designed by
extracting elements from two similar antique rugs which appealed to me
most. The pattern measures 19 x 35 and is drawn on Dorr Natural
Primitive Linen. It has been hooked using #8 and #8.5 wool strips.
The pattern will have serged edges and hand drawn on the straight of
grain. $65 plus shipping.
|
Ducks and
Egg Nest Pattern
an antique adaptation
This is an adaptation of an
antique rug which is
estimated to have been hooked between 1875 and 1923 in Canada. I have tried
to replicate it in as close to the colors as the original antique using
colors available to me.
The pattern measures 16 x 31
and is drawn on Dorr Natural Primitive Linen. It has been hooked
using #8 and #8.5 wool strips. The pattern will have serged edges
and hand drawn on the straight of grain. $60 plus shipping.

E. S. Frost Sheep
w/ Scrolls Pattern
an antique adaptation
|
Maine entrepreneur Edward Sands Frost
began his journey selling preprinted designs on burlap in the 1860s.
His patterns were transported and sold out of a Peddler's cart.
There are a couple antique hooked versions
of this mighty handsome sheep but I have chosen to hook the one with the
scrolls; perhaps one day I'll decide to hook another version. Our
foremothers used to hook with whatever textile they had available; and
more than likely there would be multiple fabrics used in the same rug.
Some of these might consist of calico, denim, cotton stocking, long
johns ~ basically whatever they had and could make good use of for
another purpose.
I hooked the scrolls in a variety of like
colors to give it some pizzazz and it certainly does make the eye view
the entire piece just to see everything that is going on and how the
colors are so compatible. And that color circles the sheep to make
it the main focus of the rug. I also did some directional hooking
in the center in front of and behind the sheep using a different warm
primitive black. I wanted to give it a vintage feel and provide
a touch of 'making do' as our foremothers would have done.
This pattern measures 26" x 40" and is
drawn on primitive natural linen. I hooked this rug in
predominantly #8.5 with some #8 for the hooves and some parts of a
scroll, and mostly #9 for background. $90 plus
shipping.

E. S. Frost Sheep Pattern
an antique adaptation
hooked by Saundra Porter
This beauty below was
hooked by Melinda Cole. I love her use of color and how she hooked
the triangle border. Great job Melinda!

Edward Sands Frost
began his journey selling preprinted designs on burlap in the 1860s.
His patterns were transported and sold out of a Peddler's cart.
This is another antique hooked version
of this handsome sheep. The original version can be seen in a book
called Rags to Rugs by Patricia T. Herr. The original antique
measured 26" x 40". This pattern I am offering measures 25" x 34".
I believe that since the original had tassels on the left and right
sides of the rug, that accounts for the difference in the width.
Therefore, I believe there is only 1" difference in the size of the
design I've hooked since I did not include tassels on my rug.
Our
foremothers used to hook with whatever textile they had available; and
more than likely there would be multiple fabrics used in the same rug.
Some of these might consist of calico, denim, cotton stocking, long
johns ~ basically whatever they had and could make good use of for
another purpose.
I tried to give the rug a look of 'making
do' by hooking the background in a variety of dark colors and used a
variety of reds and golds. Even with the flowers and birds, it is
obvious that the sheep is the main focus of the rug.
This pattern measures 25" x 34" and is
drawn on Dorr primitive natural linen. I hooked this rug in using
wool strips between #5 and #8.5 depending on what I felt was needed in
that section of the rug. Attention is paid to drawing on the
straight of the grain. Pattern is $85 plus shipping.
|
The Cat's Meow Pattern

drawn straight of the grain on Dorr Natural Primitive Linen.

|
Foxy Mat Pattern
This is a Running Fox but
could also be seen by some people as a running dog. I hooked this
piece in the style of Magdalena Briner with the corner swags and
circles. The design measures 14" x 17".
The edges of the linen has been serged and care was taken to be sure all
four sides were drawn straight of grain. $40 plus shipping.
|
Pot of Flowers Pattern
An adaptation of an antique design it measures 16 x 23. It is drawn on Dorr Natural linen and has serged edges. Care is taken to be sure all sides are drawn on the straight of grain. I hooked my rug using #8 and #8.5 wool strips. $48 plus shipping.
|
Red Bird of Pennsylvania PATTERN

|
Stag Chair Pad PATTERN
This is an adaptation of an
antique rug hooked in the 1870s. I have adapted it into a chair
pad for myself but you could always make it a circle (as in the
original) or with straight lines for a more rectangular shape.
The finished pattern measures 14"
x 16" and is hand drawn on primitive linen with serged edges.
$40 plus shipping.
|
Hearts and Swags PATTERN
This is an adaptation of an antique design. I hooked this one using torn strips of wool ranging from 1/2" to 1" widths. An occasional #8 or #8.5 strip may have been hooked in just for variety.
I made this into a pillow which is really nice to lean against with it's dimensions of 20 x 20. I also offer the pattern in a 25 x 25 size.
Drawn on Dorr natural primitive linen with serged edges.
20 x 20 is $48 plus shipping.
25 x 25 is $55 plus shipping.
|
500 Mile Betts PATTERN
This is an adaptation of a quilt block by Harriet Powers which was sewn in the 1800's. I changed a pendulum clock into a modern day clock. Harriet's story has it that the independent hog ran 500 miles from Georgia to Virginia, her name was Betts.
Drawn on Dorr natural primitive linen the pattern measures 18 x 21.5. $50 plus shipping.
|
Mache Jack-O-Lanterns PATTERN
This is my original design as I'd always wanted to own some of those old paper mache Jacks. They are hard to find in antique shops and if you do they are pricey. So I decided to hook my own version. It measues 15 x 25, drawn on Dorr natural primitive linen with serged edges. $50 plus shipping.
|
Ali Katz PATTERN
This rug design is a Laurel Burch style rug I drew and hooked in a class with Ali Strebel. So many people have inquired about the design that I decided to sell patterns in two sizes.
The one pictured here measures 24 x 34 and I plan to offer a 24 x 24 pattern which would not have the zig zag at the two ends.
The pattern will be drawn on Dorr natural primitive linen with serged edges.
24 x 34 is $70 plus shipping
24 x 24 is $60 plus shipping.

Holiday Tree Ornaments PATTERN
This is my design and measures 10
1/2" x 18 1/2". The pattern has serged edges and is hand
drawn straight of the grain on Dorr Natural Primitive Linen.
It was fun to hook and I used a metallic yarn
for the tops of the balls. Would make a great contribution to the
holiday trimmings. $35 plus shipping.
|

Dorr primitive natural linen with serged edges. Measures 6"

6 x 8 1/2" long.

Auntie Peanut PATTERN
The piece below was hooked by Lauren Fugua
and like how she added more swags along the side it does make the mat
easier on the eye; thanks Lauren! Ya dun good.
This is my design and based
on a woman I knew from the age of 3 years old. She was a wee bit
of a woman who helped care for my ailing grandmother. Auntie
Peanut was like a family member and used to say that my hair was so
curly that I looked just like Shirley Temple.
The pattern measures 12 1/2"
x 12 1/2" and is drawn on primitive linen with serged edges.
$35 plus shipping

Rubber Ducky Chair Pad PATTERN
This was my last chair pad I hooked and
think it is a hoot; however it doesn't need to be used as a chair pad.
Instead you could adapt the design by hooking it in a square rather than
rounding the design.
Of course the subject is a rubber ducky
that we are all familiar with. I initially hooked it for a friend
of mine and thought it would be a great pattern to offer others.
It measures 14" in diameter so if you chose to hook it in square it
would measure 14" x 14". $35 plus shipping.
|
Mother Hen PATTERN
This is my brand new design and measures 14" x 15 1/2". The pattern has serged edges and is hand
drawn straight of the grain on Dorr Natural Primitive Linen.
It was a lot of fun to hook and would be a
cute spring design, or if you collect chicken and rooster knick knacks,
this would go well in the kitchen. And, if you know someone who
does act as mother hen, it would make a great 'thank you' gift.
$40 plus shipping.

Dorr Natural Primitive Linen
Perfect for a beginner hooker who doesn't
have a serger and wants to design their own small rug? I have a
few pre-serged pieces of linen which measure 14 1/2" x 18".
s you can see by the picture below, it is a
suitable size to draw a purse shape on. Not sure how these
pictures are showing up on your computer. On one of my computers
the linen looks normal, but on the other it looks funky. The weave
is not loose like this picture indicates. When I
reduced the picture size something wacky happened to the lines.
This is a Dorr Natural Primitive Linen.
This would also be a great size to draw a
small mat, hook a trivet or design seasonal pieces to put out on your
table. $5.00 plus shipping.
|
BEE HIVE with FLOWERS is a design by Pat
Hornifus drawn on cotton rug warp with serged edges. It measures
30" x 37" and was drawn by Fraser Rugs.
I do not have a color visual of a finished
rug of this design, sorry. I never got around to hooking it, but
can see this finished piece in a sun room, at a beach house or just about
anywhere to remind us of warm weather and mother nature at it's finest.
If you would like to see a larger view of
this picture please e-mail me.
$45 plus shipping.

School Primary PATTERN
