Rug Hooking and Dolls

 Domestic Zoo Pattern

adaptation of an antique rug by Magdalena Briner

The original rug (24" x 75") was hooked approximately 1870 by Magdalena Briner who hooked motifs which were familiar to her.  The images in the rug are serpents, leaves, birds, cats, donkey, fruit and other images in the mind and hand of Magdalena.  She used whatever textiles or colors she had available to her which makes this a wonderful rug to hook as you can use up wool strips left over from previous projects.  Then as you are hooking you can say to yourself...." I'll use this because 'that is all she had' to use.  I've mentally used that phrase numerous times throughout this rug and it is a beauty.

This design measures 22 1/2" x 66" which is a tad smaller than the original version but still captures it's essence.  It was hooked using mostly #8 and #8.5 cuts, will be hand drawn on linen backing with a 3" margin and serged edges to prevent raveling.  $98 plus shipping.

E. S. Frost Sheep w/ Scrolls Pattern

an antique adaptation

Maine entrepreneur Edward Sands Frost began his journey selling preprinted designs on burlap in the 1860s.  His patterns were transported and sold out of a Peddler's cart.

There are a couple antique hooked versions of this mighty handsome sheep but I have chosen to hook the one with the scrolls; perhaps one day I'll decide to hook another version.  Our foremothers used to hook with whatever textile they had available; and more than likely there would be multiple fabrics used in the same rug.  Some of these might consist of calico, denim, cotton stocking, long johns ~ basically whatever they had and could make good use of for another purpose.

I hooked the scrolls in a variety of like colors to give it some pizzazz and it certainly does make the eye view the entire piece just to see everything that is going on and how the colors are so compatible.  And that color circles the sheep to make it the main focus of the rug.  I also did some directional hooking in the center in front of and behind the sheep using a different warm primitive black.  I wanted to give it a vintage feel and provide  a touch of 'making do' as our foremothers would have done.

This pattern measures 26" x 40" and is drawn on primitive natural linen.  I hooked this rug in predominantly #8.5 with some #8 for the hooves and some parts of a scroll, and mostly #9 for background.    $90 plus shipping.

E. S. Frost Sheep Pattern

an antique adaptation

Edward Sands Frost began his journey selling preprinted designs on burlap in the 1860s.  His patterns were transported and sold out of a Peddler's cart.

This is another antique hooked version of this handsome sheep.  The original version can be seen in a book called Rags to Rugs by Patricia T. Herr.  The original antique measured 26" x 40".  This pattern I am offering measures 25" x 34".  I believe that since the original had tassels on the left and right sides of the rug, that accounts for the difference in the width.  Therefore, I believe there is only 1" difference in the size of the design I've hooked since I did not include tassels on my rug.

Our foremothers used to hook with whatever textile they had available; and more than likely there would be multiple fabrics used in the same rug.  Some of these might consist of calico, denim, cotton stocking, long johns ~ basically whatever they had and could make good use of for another purpose.

I tried to give the rug a look of 'making do' by hooking the background in a variety of dark colors and used a variety of reds and golds.  Even with the flowers and birds, it is obvious that the sheep is the main focus of the rug.

This pattern measures 25" x 34" and is drawn on Dorr primitive natural linen.  I hooked this rug in using wool strips between #5 and #8.5 depending on what I felt was needed in that section of the rug.  Attention is paid to drawing on the straight of the grain.  Pattern is $85 plus shipping.

Stag Rug PATTERN

Another adaptation of the same antique rug hooked in the 1870s which is to your right, this rug measures 20" x 27 1/2".  I plan to use it on my harvest table but would make a great rug at the hearth, on an antique chest or hanging on the wall.

The edges of the linen has been serged and care was taken to be sure all four sides were drawn straight of grain.  $50 plus shipping

Stag Chair Pad PATTERN

This is an adaptation of an antique rug hooked in the 1870s.  I have adapted it into a chair pad for myself but you could always make it a circle (as in the original) or with straight lines for a more rectangular shape.

The finished pattern measures 14"  x  16" and is hand drawn on primitive linen with serged edges.   $30 plus shipping.

Rubber Ducky Chair Pad PATTERN

This was my last chair pad I hooked and think it is a hoot; however it doesn't need to be used as a chair pad.  Instead you could adapt the design by hooking it in a square rather than rounding the design.

Of course the subject is a rubber ducky that we are all familiar with.  I initially hooked it for a friend of mine and thought it would be a great pattern to offer others.  It measures 14" in diameter so if you chose to hook it in square it would measure !4" x 14".  $30 plus shipping.

Fresh Fish PATTERN

Fish pattern on monks cloth 11 x 19

Pattern ~ on linen  11 x 19 with 3" margin and serged edges  $25 plus shipping

BEE HIVE with FLOWERS is a design by Pat Hornifus drawn on cotton rug warp with serged edges.  It measures 30" x 37" and was drawn by Fraser Rugs.

I do not have a color visual of a finished rug of this design, sorry.  I never got around to hooking it, but can see this finished piece in a sunroom, at a beach house or just about anywhere to remind us of warm weather and mother nature at it's finest.

If you would like to see a larger view of this picture please e-mail me.

$40 plus shipping.

REMEMBRANCE OSV #510 is a design by Cushing and measures 25" x 36".  It is drawn on burlap with serged edges.  If you are into narrow cuts this is the rug for you.

If you wish to see a larger picture or close up shots of parts of this rug please e-mail me and I will send them to you.

$30 plus shipping.

TOTE assembly

Here are two totes I assembled for students from a tote class given by Polly Minick.  The wools were provided by Polly for the class with Doris selecting her own choice of lining fabrics.

When I drew the pattern for Polly she asked if I would be interested in assembling totes for anyone in her class who might inquire; well of course I said, "Yes".

This next tote was hooked by another student and as with Doris, she chose her own lining and strap fabric choices.  Both are beautiful bags.

Please feel free to inquire on tote assembly or pattern design.  E-mail me by clicking HERE
